Fix “Error Opening Journal” in Zinnia (iPad)

Seeing an “Error Opening Journal” message? No need to worry—Zinnia includes a built-in Recover Journal feature that can rebuild a fixed copy of your journal in just a few seconds. This guide walks you through how to restore your work safely and quickly.

What You’ll Need

Before getting started:

  • Zinnia installed on your iPad

  • Ability to open the Journals dashboard

  • A stable internet connection (recommended for syncing and recovery)

  • iPad running iOS 15.5 or later

How to Recover Your Journal

* First, a quick precaution

Don’t delete the app. If you’re having issues, deleting Zinnia can make recovery harder. If nothing works after following these steps, contact Support from within the app before reinstalling.

1. Open the journal showing the error.

Tap on the journal tile that displays “Error Opening Journal.”

2. Tap Recover Journal.

You’ll see this option on the prompt—tap it to begin recovery.

3. Wait a few seconds.

Zinnia will rebuild a fixed version of your journal. Most recoveries finish quickly.

4. Review the journal.

Once it opens, flip through a few pages to confirm everything is back.

5. Still seeing the error?

Force-quit Zinnia (swipe it up from the app switcher), restart the app, and try the recovery again.

6. If recovery still doesn’t work, contact us!

  • Open Zinnia to the Journals screen
  • Tap the more options icon (…) in the top right corner.
  • Tap Help.
  • Tap Contact Support.
  • Include a description of the issue, what you’ve tried, and attach screenshots or screen recordings if you can.

Tips and Notes

  • Don’t delete or reinstall the app while troubleshooting—this could remove important data that helps with recovery
  • After a successful recovery, leave the journal open for a moment to let iCloud finish syncing
  • If multiple journals show the error, recover them one at a time for best results
